"Tried," said Maria. "Didn't do much. Kiddo's clammed up a lot, and what I could get out of her was cranky and borderline hostile." She sighed. "That part she got from me, I guess. The stubbornness, too." She pushed her chair back from the desk to stand up and stretch her legs. "I think she might blame me."
